Using heat, air, or both, the white resin spreads into delicate patterns that resemble sea foam washing onto the beach.  The elusive "cells" and lacing patterns—the delicate, bubbly seafoam texture—happen when a dense white pigment sinks and spreads across a less dense layer of colored or clear resin.

The key is patience and practice—every wave is unique, making each artwork one of a kind.

What Creates Cells in Resin?

Cells are small, rounded openings that appear when different densities of resin interact. In ocean resin art, these cells create the realistic foamy appearance that gives waves depth and texture.

Several factors influence cell formation:

  • Resin viscosity
  • Pigment type
  • Temperature
  • Heat application
  • Resin thickness
  • Timing between pours

Materials You'll Need

  • High-quality art resin
  • White resin pigment or paste

Step 1: Prepare Your Surface

Before mixing resin, ensure your artwork is perfectly level. Even a slight tilt can cause resin to flow unevenly, affecting your wave patterns.

Protect your workspace and make sure your room is between 70–75°F (21–24°C) for the best results.

Step 2: Mix Your Resin Thoroughly

Measure your resin and hardener exactly according to the manufacturer's instructions.

Mix slowly for several minutes until completely clear, scraping the sides and bottom of the cup to avoid unmixed resin.

Divide your resin into separate cups for each color.

Step 3: Create Your Ocean Background

Pour your blue and turquoise shades first, blending them gently to create natural depth.

Avoid overmixing the colors—letting them blend naturally often creates the most realistic water effect.

Step 4: Add the White Resin

The most crucial secret to pristine cell formation is adding a thin line of clear resin right where you want the wave to crash. This clear layer acts as a smooth buffer, preventing the white pigment from muddying into the blue base colors. Next, mix a highly concentrated pea-sized amount of white pigment paste into a small portion of resin. Drizzle a thin, continuous white line directly along the edge of the clear resin strip.

Less is often more. Too much white pigment can create a heavy, solid line instead of delicate lacing.

Step 5: Use Heat to Form Waves

This is where the magic happens.  

 Let the Resin Thicken

Do not blast the white line with heat immediately. Let the poured resin rest on the board for 10 to 15 minutes until it starts to slightly gel and hold its structure. Pushing the resin when it is too runny causes the white line to dissipate, wash out, or completely dissolve into the base colors.

Attach the concentrator nozzle (small cone shape) to your heat gun. Set it to high heat but low fan speed. 
  • Hold the heat gun at a low, 45-degree angle (almost parallel to the board).
  • Point the gun behind the white line and gently push the white resin backward over the blue gradient.
  • Do not hover or make multiple passes. One smooth motion is all it takes. Overheating will burn the resin and ruin the cells. 
Pop Bubbles and Activate Lacing 

Immediately pass a butane torch quickly over the blown wave. The heat from the torch pops surface bubbles and causes the dense white pigment to rapidly sink and separate, snapping the lacing pattern into place.

Tips for Better Cells

If you're struggling to get cells, try these techniques:

  • Use a thicker white pigment paste instead of liquid color.
  • Wait a few minutes before applying heat.
  • Apply gentle heat instead of excessive heat.
  • Keep your resin layer moderately thick.
  • Avoid overworking the resin once cells begin forming.
